Broken tonight — what actually happens before morning?
We get to the opening, take out whatever glass is still hanging in the frame, sweep the sidewalk and the entrance, and close it with board or a temporary glazed panel so the building is secure and you can trade. Then we measure. The permanent pane follows the fabrication: stock sizes are quick, toughened, laminated and sealed units are made to your measurement, and you get that date on the night.
There is no glazing licence in Ontario — so what should we judge you on?
On the things that can actually be checked. A current liability insurance certificate and WSIB clearance, both of which we hand over before starting. A workmanship guarantee in writing. And the specification itself: whether the person quoting can tell you which of your openings the code requires safety glazing in, and whether they will put annealed glass back into one that does. We will not.
It was a break-in — how do we handle the insurance side?
Photograph everything before anybody sweeps, including the point of entry and the glass on the ground, because the insurer and the police report both want it and it cannot be recreated later. From there we provide an itemized scope and invoicing an adjuster can work with, and we can bill the insurer directly where the policy allows. Getting the opening secured does not prejudice a claim.
Half the windows on one side of the house have hazed over — why now?
Because they all went in at the same time. Rolling Acres, Taunton North, Williamsburg and Whitby Shores filled in through the 1990s and 2000s, so a whole cohort of sealed units is reaching the end of its life within a few years of itself — and the south and west elevations, which take the most thermal cycling, generally go first. Low winter sun then makes every one of them obvious on the same morning.
